Hi, I’m fantasy author Deborah Jay.
I’m a lifelong fantasy and science fiction fan: books, TV, films – can’t get enough.
Growing up I can just remember the excitement surrounding the first moon landing, and through childhood I devoured a steady TV diet of such shows as My Favourite Martian, Bewitched, all the Gerry Anderson series: Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO. And, of course, Star Trek.
You get the picture: wired for science fiction and fantasy from birth. No regrets there. As genres, they are a writer’s dream: the ultimate scope for imagination. And boy, is my imagination demanding! For years I read books as fast as I could find them, and then it occurred to me that I could write them too.
I have a dream of a day job as a trainer of competition dressage horses, so my fiction writing has to fit around that, but being able to make my own schedule is a definite advantage to being self-employed.
So in the real world I am professional rider, trainer, judge and author, Debby Lush. I write features and answer readers’ questions on dressage in magazines and websites, and currently have two books available, The Building Blocks of Training and The Successful Dressage Competitor with a third, 100+ School Exercises for Dressage due out in 2023.
My debut novel, award winning fantasy The Prince’s Man was published July 2013. It won an award from the UK Arts Council, and shot straight into the Amazon Top 100 Hot New Releases.
Think James Bond meets Lord of the Rings – a fun, fast, action-packed story featuring a pair of mismatched spies who are struggling to save their kingdom whilst trying not to kill each other.

Hi Debby, wow, I just read your sidebar, your book was pirated, holy crap! How did you find out? We hear so much about that stuff yet we always hope it won’t happen to us. You go girl!

Thanks for looking! It was another author who gave me the heads up – we’d recently connected on Twitter, and she noticed my book on a site where she’d found her own pirated book. She was kind enough to tell me about it and then coach me through how to deal with it – love this community!
Her advice is to do regular google searches for your book title.
Have to say, I’m quite amused by it. I remember reading a big name (though frustratingly can’t recall who it is) author saying he loves to be pirated – its like doing a free promotion with no effort on his part. He actually found his sales went UP as a result!
Of course that’s not going to happen while I only have one book out there, so back to the grindstone…

Lol, I believe I read that from David Gaughran in his book, ‘Let’s Get Digital.’ Although it is flattering, I would still be mortified. Can you sue this person? I mean what the heck is copyright for? Wasn’t this pirate making money off your book?

Yes, I’m pretty sure I did too, but he’s not the only one I’ve heard it from. I’m looking on it as validation that someone thought it was good enough to be worth copying – they’re not going to waste their time with something that won’t sell, are they?
As far as suing – first, you’d have to find out who they are (all you see is the name they’ve chosen to use on that site), then what country they are in (international law is very complex) and at the end of the day, the amount of money isn’t worth the time – I’m better off spending that writing the next book.
I did get them removed from the site, but they’ve probably just gone somewhere else – that’s why the need to keep doing searches, to see where they pop up again.
Just one more thing to deal with, which is why I’m not getting too intense about it.

I love Nicholas’s books, and its great to see other people appreciate them. He put some (or maybe all) of the short stories up on his blog, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading them.
I can’t claim the Hobbit hole, unfortunately – it really is in Hobbiton, I spent New Years day 2012 indulging my LOTR fantasies there!
I can certainly go with your Viking identity – I am just in the process of moving to the Scottish Highlands to fulfil my dreams of living in a wilder, less populated area. Last year I visited Staffa island, and on the boat trip out, we passed the island that inspired Hiccup’s home. So exciting!

Please do, I don’t think you can ever get enough of Scotland, there’s just something about it. I had the pleasure of visiting Edinburgh in July with my nieces and nephew, and absolutely loved it. We managed to climb Arthur’s Seat, I know it’s not exactly a mountain but it was quite a hike for us Londoners! 😅

Aw, thank you, but my nieces and nephew deserve all the credit – they threatened to climb the rest of the way without me, so I went with them – I didn’t think my sister would appreciate me coming back with any less than the 3 children I left with 😀
