Today, I’m taking the briefest of breaks from reading Book #2 of this series to review Book #1.
This might tell you how much I’m enjoying this series: I’m already disappointed there are only four books so far, there must be more – please make it so!
Wake-Robin Ridge by Marcia Meara
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Sarah leaves her dead-end library job for a remote cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains where she plans to write a book.
Ruth runs away from her abusive husband, taking his illicitly-gained money and his car, and hides out in a remote cabin…yes, you’ve guessed it – the same cabin, only 50 years apart.
The stories of these two women are told in parallel, along with that of Mac, Sarah’s gorgeous but brooding and private neighbour. Both are love stories that will eventually collide in a shocking, macabre manner, involving a ghost and a long-held secret, the unravelling of which brings Sarah and Mac finally together.
It’s hard to define this book: romance, yes. Supernatural, a little. But entertaining, engrossing and delightful, very definitely.
The author has a charming style, with beautiful descriptions, natural dialogue, and fully developed characters you would like to know in real life. Be warned, once you start this book, you will likely be late for every upcoming appointment, and prone to yawning your way through the day because you just had to stay up and finish that chapter. And then the next. And the next.
And then you have to go straight on and buy the next one…

Oh, my gosh, Debby! What a fabulous, fun review!! I’m so happy you enjoyed my first-ever book, and that you hit on all the things I was aiming for with this story. Because I only ever intended to write the one, I did pack it full, but I tried to do it in a way that would really pull readers into the story. And I’m truly thrilled it worked for you. I just had a book release party Saturday for my 4th in this series, and I got loads of love from everyone there. It’s SUPER great to have it continue this gray Monday morning.
Of course, as you know by now, a certain little boy comes along in Book 2 who manages to wrest control of my entire romantic suspense series idea, but I’m not complaining. He has turned out to be everyone’s favorite character out of all seven of my novels, and I had to bite my tongue half off not to reveal to folks at the party what I have planned for Rabbit next. (And nope, not gonna tell you either, but I hope when you find out, you won’t be unhappy.)

Thanks, again, Debby! Everyone kept asking for “More Rabbit,” and not being one to ignore what my readers enjoy, that’s what I’ve tried to give them. Along with new characters and mysteries and various kinds of trouble along the way. Hope you continue to enjoy him! He’s a treat to write, especially since he’s so good at dictating what he wants me to say! 😀 ❤

I would suggest so – I’ve been slow working my way through the monster TBR list I think all authors have, and it’s such a pleasure to crack open a book by an author you already know you love, and find such a gem as this series.

Glad you like the sound of it, Jacqui. And that’s the very reason I decided to write about “my” cabin. I’ve been to the mountains many times in the past, especially when I was active in a group of fans of the movie Last of the Mohicans, which met every year to tour the Biltmore and other filming locations. (We also had actors Wes Studi and Eric Schweig (Magua & Uncas in the movie) visit us, and exhibitions of musket firing, etc, but that’s a whole ‘nuther story).
At any rate, at some point during the weekend, we’d always drive by an old deserted cabin sitting right at the edge of the woods, and I used to wonder about the stories it could tell. So I decided, since I couldn’t move there and experience my own, I’d make them up on paper, instead. And I wrote Wake-Robin Ridge to do just that–then kept on going! 😀 ❤

Oh my, your Last of the Mohicans group sounds reminiscent of my Lord of the Rings tour of NZ, visiting film locations and meeting some of the performers (mostly stunt and extras sadly, not the big stars). Of course, I only got to do this once, NZ is a little far to go every year…

Debbie, I had so much fun the the LoTM group. Folks came from all over the world, including Scotland and the Netherlands. And we did fantastic things while up there. Your New Zealand trip sounds like so much fun, too! I love stuff like that. And nothing compares to hiking up the cliff trail at Chimney Rock where all the pivotal drama played out at the end of the movie. We had the BEST times! I think I went six years in a row, and Soldier#2 is still a good friend of mine who follows me on Facebook. So it wasn’t all about star power, though those were exciting moments, as well, for sure. And yep. I think that little cabin would be a perfect place to write a novel. Sarah though so, as well, and by golly, she DID. 😀 😀 😀

For me, there was nothing quite like taking a helicopter ride (the only way to get there) to the top of a mountain where one of the scenes in Fellowship of the Ring was filmed, and lying where Aragorn had hidden beneath a rock, and then riding through the forest past the leafy bank where Boromir met his end.
It was truly AWESOME!

Debby, your trip sounds amazing, except for the part about the helicopter. Eeeeek. Nope. Not gonna do that if I’m conscious and able to fight back. 😀 I don’t like flying in AIRPLANES, but less the thought of a helicopter. But I’m glad you did and were able to have so much fun. It’s sort of amazing to be standing (or lying) right where a certain actor was filmed in a favorite movie. We acted out all sorts of LoTM scenes in every location we went to, and quoted all our favorite lines on the spot, too. 😀 Good for you, getting to do that, and in a country like New Zealand, too. It always looks so gorgeous in photos. 🙂

We re-enacted King Theodan’s rousing speech to his troops before the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and all charged down the hill using bull rushes for swords (no horses, unfortunately). I’ve just gone to look for the video, and file is corrupted 😦 So disappointed, it was so much fun!

Aw, man! I’m so sorry that file was messed up! I’d pay MONEY to see something like that! It’s just the kind of thing my LoTM friends would have done! I can SO identify with you guys. *sigh* There’s just something about being on the spot where you were emotionally invested in a tale to bring it all to life in your mind, and to spur you to shouting bits of dialogue or reenacting entire scenes! I have pictures of me (and my friends) posing on the rock where Alice stepped off into space in LoTM, and even one of my lying on the rocky trail a la dead Mohawk, as Hawkeye ran by. (BTW, while Alice’s rock looks to be a direct fall to instant death hundreds of feet below, it’s actually hanging over more rocks, with a drop of about 10 or 12 feet. I wouldn’t have wanted to fall that far, either, but it wasn’t quite as dangerous as it looked in the movie.)
It’s lovely to imagine you having such a good time on your LoTR expedition. ( LoTR and LoTM? I love that, too.) 😀 ❤

I read this book and loved it for all the same reasons – and then along came the second book and Rabbit. Many writers struggle with their follow-up book but this series just grows in your heart along with this special young boy. I’ve read every one of Marcia’s books and they’re all great keep-you-awake reads! ❤
