When I finished my first book in the Pearseus universe, I was faced with an unexpected problem: everyone kept saying that identifying your genre was important. But my book crossed many genres. It was, essentially, a fantasy tale taking place in the future, with technology and a tiny bit of crystal magic. So, how the heck do you find a genre to shoehorn this kind of book into?

I’ve seen many variations on this topic (and I’m sure there will continue to be more), but always helpful to have at least one solid (and extensive) opinion available, especially for new authors trying to get their bearings.

That’s a wonderful list. I’ve been intrigued by the wide variety of genres (and subgenres) for several years now. I can’t help but think they are growing!

My feeling too, and the definitions seem to be rather fluid over time, sometimes changing quite considerably as more specific sub-genres are recognised.
Doesn’t make picking your precise sub-genre easy!
