Unicorn Magic by Roz Marshall

This short story is a teaser for The Celtic Fey series, and I appreciate that. There’s nothing more annoying than investing time in a new series, only to find you really don’t like the writing, characters, plot etc. Unicorn Magic gives an excellent taster for the series, for only a small time investment, and left me wanting more. Job well done.
The writing is excellent, and the concept, for me, a real grabber. Scottish teen, Corrine, immerses herself in the virtual reality game ‘Feyland’, to escape her sorrow at the death of her beloved horse (I loved her already for that). She is also determined, self-reliant, and loyal – a strong central character.
The action inside VR is dangerous and challenging, and a little horrifying when the boundaries between Feyland and the real world blur a bit too much to be ignored. There are fey, the wild hunt, and, of course a unicorn to save Corrine and her mysterious friend, Elphin.
I have added the next book – Kelpie Curse – to my reading list.

I got this short story as a freebie from Scottish author, Roz Marshall, who is generous with her free stories – expect more reviews from me. Though this particular one is urban fantasy, many of her stories are straightforward romance, which is not in general my bag, but she writes well, and the Scottish settings are always a draw for me, plus, they involve sports. She also writes an SF series which I have yet to explore.
