#Authors, why use #hashtags in your blog post titles?

You may have noticed that I use hashtags in my blog post titles, and I wouldn’t blame you for wondering why – that used to be me, too, when I noticed an author I follow cluttering up her titles with those rather unattractive tags.

But we want people to share our posts, don’t we? After all, that’s why we have all those ‘share’ buttons after our posts – to make it simple and fast for people to share – but how effective are they?

If you’re sharing to Facebook, then its likely to be to your closer group of friends; to Google, your like-minded associates.

But to Twitter?

Have you looked at the tweets generated by the share buttons, before you click on ‘tweet’?

They include the title of your piece – but unless the sharer takes the time to add hashtags, they go out with, often, a title that strangers might not find captivating enough to get them to click through to your blog.

If, on the other hand, you put appropriate hashtags into your title, hey presto! There they are in the ready generated tweet, so anybody looking at the hashtagged subjects you’ve chosen will see the tweet, understand the subject, and hopefully come to take a look at your blog post.

And that, dear friends, is why there are Twitter hashtags in my blog post titles.

I do this as well and it works wonders on Twitter as well as Google +! 🙂 Great list, by the way!

Great post. I’ve often thought about inserting hashtags into my blog posts, but I’m not super well versed in the hashtag lore. Could you maybe tell us a little about good, all purpose hastags to use for those who are unsure?

I’m still feeling my way around Twitter and am still not really sure I know how it works. Thank you for posting this – the hashtag list is useful!

Thanks for this very informative post! Putting this into action. I am still somewhat new to all of this as I am from “the old school”, but I am learning. This actually inspired my post, the one with the hashtags of course!

Deborah, and other authors, I am a member of a writers’ group on Facebook by Beverly Nault, who is an author and also worked with Mary McDonough (“Erin” on “The Waltons”) on her book, “Lessons From the Mountain, What I Learned From Erin Walton”. The group is called “Fresh Starts Writing Room- advice for emerging writers.” It’s open to “emerging writers” as well as published authors for insight and encouragement.
